Title: US Education and One Approach to Active Learning via Mathematical Modeling
Speaker: Weldon A. Lodwick
Abstract:     The talk today is a view of the US system of education together with one type of active learning via a mathematical modeling project that the first author has conducted over the last 40 years.  The type of active learning is a group-base approach where problems from society, institutions, or companies were shared with the math/stat department and brought into the classroom seminar under the leadership of a professor. The seminars were conducted from the academic year of 1981-82 until the present and is a part of the undergraduate and the graduate program.  There was at least 1 seminar per semester so that over 42 years there have been at least 84 applied problems on which our students worked.
*** This presentation is part of ongoing research that Professor Marina T. Mizukoshi and I are currently doing via a project of FAPEG.
